Individual Micro-teaching and Lesson Plan

Topic: Follow through figure-8 knot and possible extensions

Materials for group to bring: At least 1m of rope, ideally at least 5mm in diameter, but can be thinner too

Lesson Plan

Reflections:

I think one of my biggest takeaways from this experience is that my interpretation of my own teaching quality tends to be harsher than the views of my peers. I was not particularly pleased about making some small mistakes (mentioned in my comment) in my micro-teaching that could easily have been avoided and would likely have made the lesson go more smoothly. Then again, it seems as though everyone was still able to follow along well enough based on their feedback.

I need to focus on maintaining confidence even when things don't go 100% as planned, and I need to practice more with becoming comfortable teaching online. I was mostly happy with the timing of my presentation and scope of content chosen.

  1. Thanks Adam! I will email the class this evening and let them know about what materials to have at hand!

Overall very good presentation from Adam. Only improvement would be timing, did not have enough time to answer questions at the end.

The structure of the lesson and the goal of the lesson are clear, it's engaging to learn. The diagrams are so great, love it! Good work

Comments: Very good explanation given that we can't be there in person, and it was a great idea to go over the uses/benefits of the knot at the beginning. Even if things don't go as planned, I think it's best not to say that so that students aren't discouraged!

Very well done presentation. Adam was very knowledgeable with knot tying and trying to troubleshoot problems over zoom. I liked the pacing and time left to try to tie knots during the presentation. Something to think about is how to make learning to tie knots less confusing with where the string should go; it is hard to visualize knot tying.

-Would have saved time by suggesting a 50cm or more segment to tie the rope with (I did too little)
-Should have used a climbing rope because it is thicker and easier to demonstrate with online
-Could have given clearer explanation of follow-through

  7. Thanks for your thoughtful reflection, Adam! Most of us generally seem to latch on to those things we thought didn't go well, in any kind of situation. This seems to be a human proclivity. It takes some learning to figure out that we can just as easily focus on the positive, and develop a greater degree of confidence in our work! Zach's comment is an apt one too: it is usually better not to express disappointment with things not going exactly as planned, as most of the people participating haven't noticed any problem, and such comments tend to introduce a note of discouragement where none is needed.
